Bandu Gardens Cultivates Bangladeshi Culture, Fruits, Veggies, and Friendships

Bandhu Gardens recognizes and showcases the talents and traditions of Bangladeshi women living in Detroit by not only selling the fruits and vegetables they grow in the urban garden on Maine Street but also offering catering, pop-up events and cooking classes. The women behind this garden and the initiative are Minara Begum, her two young daughters, and their neighbor/business partner Emily Staugaitis.

The garden, which takes up several city lots and hosts a variety of fruit and vegetable plants from squashes and tomatoes to plums and raspberries, came about by proximity that grew to friendship and now incorporates a very deep history of food culture and knowledge.
